Study found that the popularity and adoption rate of an automation system is depends upon its active user and developer community, trouble-shooting and customization support, frequency of training programs, promotional activities, support from Government, Public and private etc. Further, the study sought to establish the reason why majority of the Indian library professionals are still considering using a foreign open source integrated library system rather than an indigenous one. Further, the analysis was limited to these two internationally competitive software such as Koha, as an example of foreign software and NewGenLib, as an indigenous software as these software received the maximum response while the reaction for other software is insignificant and does not seem to have many adherents. To support the statement of ‘inclining attitude’ an online survey method was adopted to identify the favored open source automation system among Indian libraries. The study examines the inclining attitude of Indian library and information science professionals towards adopting or migrating to a single software Koha, a foreign-born open source integrated library system rather than NewGenLib, an indigenous one with better options developed taking into account typical Indian library practices and customs. One of the basic and quality service requirements that need to be achieved in the initial stage of development of any library is automation, to perform its essential routines and operations. Presently, libraries and library professionals are in the midst of technological restructure to meet the ever-increasing expectations of its users to provide instant access to the required information. Libraries and information centers have been held accountable for the intellectual task of content management and digital archives since many decades. This paper is the first of its kind that explores the level of awareness and use of open source ILS by LIS professionals in India in a broad manner. The paper will help decision makers to adopt and use popular open source ILS in their libraries. Koha is the most favoured open source ILS. The findings of the study reveal that the level of awareness and use of open source ILS, namely, Koha (Mean = 2.69, SD = 0.944) and NewGenLib (Mean = 2.19, SD = 0.703) are high among the LIS professionals in India. In total, 408 responses were collected from LIS professionals in India, and the collected data were analysed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s Chi-Square. Further, it examines whether qualification, experience of using open source ILS and participation in open source community/mailing list by the LIS professionals affect their level of awareness and use of different open source ILSs.Īn online survey was conducted to assess the level of awareness and use of open source ILS by LIS professionals of India. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the level of awareness and use of open source integrated library system (ILS) by the library and information science (LIS) professionals in India.
